Noroît Red 2020

Noroît | Red

AOC Pessac-Léognan

Présentation

Noroît is a single-varietal micro-cuvée from Château de Rochemorin. Its name is inspired by a seafaring term meaning a north-westerly wind, and echoes the estate's most north-westerly parcel. A confidential wine made from a historic Bordeaux grape variety with long Médoc roots, Petit Verdot. This terroir, rich in organic matter, provides optimal conditions for the full expression of its aromatic potential. With a fine tannic structure, fatness and freshness, it reveals notes of black fruit and cedar, which give it a lot of deliciousness. Good ageing potential. Only 1,200 bottles produced each year.

Conditions météorologiques

2020 was marked by very mild temperatures and contrasting precipitation: heavy spring rainfall was followed by an intense summer drought. The fairly mild winter led to early bud break. The summer heat gave way to cool nights in late August, ideal for ripening grapes.

Dégustation

Deep red colour with purple highlights.
Nose opens up with a light woody note before allowing a profusion of black fruit notes (blackberry and blueberry), to which are added aromas of cocoa.
Mouth with a nice tannic structure. The mid-palate is full and fresh. Notes of black fruit (blackberry, blueberry), combined with aromas of cedar, bring a lot of greed. This is a wine with good ageing potential.

This, too, is a little smoky and meaty, but rather closer to the slightly austere and serious Coeur Perdu than the more boisterous and effervescent Tracé in style. There’s a lovely note of cedar already. And, again like the Coeur Perdu, a beautifully luminous almost crystalline, limpid mid-palate charged with fresh, crunchy dark berry fruits (loganberry and raspberry above all). At first it’s not as peppery as you expect, but with more air-time (as it were) assorted crushed peppercorn notes gradually reveal themselves, but never in a dominant way. We have great purity and precision here – a very direct and clear expression of the varietal. I love the subtle floral element that I was not really expecting and that linger on the finish – hibiscus perhaps. Tender, lithe, sumptuous.

Château de Rochemorin

Château de Rochemorin is located on one of the highest gravelly hilltops in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Formerly owned by the famous philosopher Montesquieu, the Château is characterized by the great diversity of its terroir. Rigorous soil mapping has enabled us to match each grape variety to the terroir best suited to it. Its white wines seduce with their remarkable aromatic palette, combining freshness and complexity, while its red wines embody the finesse and elegance of great Bordeaux wines.
